Gothenburg
A port city on the Kattegat Strait in southwestern Sweden. It is located at the mouth of the Göta River and is connected to Stockholm by the Göta Canal. It is Sweden's largest commercial port. Industries include lumber, paper, steel, shipbuilding, automobiles, ball bearings, machinery, and textiles. It is the headquarters of Volvo, world-famous for its automobiles. It has a university (founded in 1891), a technical university, a nautical school, a marine research institute, and a maritime museum. The city's foundations were established by Gustav Adolf in 1619, and it has since developed as a commercial center. Since the early 20th century, it has been a major terminal for transatlantic shipping routes. Population: 526,089 (2012).
