Daikandaiji Temple

Japanese: 大官大寺 - だいかんだいじ

This is the predecessor temple of Daian-ji Temple in Nara. It began when Kumagori Shoja Temple, built by Prince Shotoku, was moved to the Baekje Riverside in 639 and named Baekje Daiji Temple. In 673 Emperor Tenmu moved it to Takechi and named it Takechi Daiji Temple, and in 677 it was given the title of Daikan-daiji Temple as the pinnacle of state Buddhism. In 701 a temple construction official was appointed and a new temple was built in a different location, but it burned down in 711. In 716 it was moved to Heijo-kyo and named Daian-ji Temple. The temple remains are in Oyama, Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, and the remains of a pagoda, main hall, and corridors have been confirmed, but the remains burned just before completion and are on the grid land division of Fujiwara-kyo, so it is highly likely that this is Daikan-daiji Temple, whose construction began in 701, and the location of the temple during the reign of Tenmu is unknown.

奈良大安寺の前身寺院。聖徳太子建立の熊凝(くまごり)精舎を639年百済川辺に移して百済大寺としたのにはじまる。673年天武天皇が高市(たけち)に移して高市大寺とし，677年国家仏教の頂点に立つ寺として大官大寺の寺号を得た。701年造寺司が任命され，別の場所で新たに造営が行われたが，711年焼亡。716年平城京内に移転して大安寺となる。寺跡は奈良県明日香村小山にあり，塔・金堂・廻廊跡などが確認されているが，この遺跡は完成直前に火災に遭っており，しかも藤原京の条坊地割にのっていることから，701年から造営が始まった大官大寺である可能性が強く，天武朝の寺の所在地は不明。
