...A patriot of the late Edo period. Born to the Kashimaya family, a pawnbroker and landowner in Kotohira, Sanuki Province. His given name was Masaaki, he was commonly known as Kashimaya Chojiro, and Enseki was his pen name. He studied poetry and prose, and later became the leader of a group of gamblers. He traveled between Kyoto and Osaka, and became acquainted with such patriots as Takasugi Shinsaku, Kido Takayoshi, and Nakaoka Shintaro, and also sheltered them in his own home. He was arrested by the Takamatsu Domain for hiding Takasugi, but was pardoned in 1868. He served as a secretary to Prince Ninnaji, the governor of the Echigo-guchi region of the Aizu expeditionary force, but died of an illness in Kashiwazaki, Echigo.
