...In Toledo and Sicily in Spain, as well as in cities in northern Italy, first-class scientific texts such as those by Euclid, Archimedes, Ptolemy, and Aristotle, as well as those by Khwarizmi, Ibn Sina, and Ibn al-Haytham, were translated into Latin, forming the intellectual foundation of Western science that would later lead to the Scientific Revolution. Among the translators of this 12th-century Renaissance are Gherard of Cremona, Adelard of Bath, Hermann von Karinthia, and Robert of Chester, among whom Gherard's contribution in particular was great, having translated more than 70 scientific texts from Arabic into Latin. In the 13th century, Western science finally began to develop independently, building on the legacy of Greek and Arabic science thus adopted. ...
