This is an evolutionary theory proposed by the Frenchman C. Lamarck in the early 19th century, which states that the characteristics acquired by parents can be passed on to their offspring. According to this theory, organs that animals use continuously become more and more developed over successive generations, while those that are not used gradually degenerate, become vestigial, and eventually disappear. This theory states that living things evolve in this way, but it is no longer believed today. However, it is considered to be the first to state the concept of evolution. At the base of Lamarck's ideas is the view that all living things have an inherent progressive tendency, and that the development of specific characteristics is the development of this tendency in a specific direction determined by external conditions.
