Yusaku Shimanaka

Japanese: 嶋中雄作 - しまなかゆうさく
Yusaku Shimanaka

Publisher. Born in Nara Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Letters, Waseda University. In October 1912 (Taisho 1), he joined Chuokoronsha through an introduction from Shimamura Hogetsu, and became a member of the editorial staff of Chuokoron, with Takita Choin as editor-in-chief. In January 1916, he became the first editor-in-chief of Fujin Koron, and entered journalism with an editorial policy that had the slogan of women's liberation. In 1928 (Showa 3), he became president, succeeding the first president. In 1929, he established a publishing department, and his first publication, All Quiet on the Western Front, became a huge bestseller. This helped to turn around the struggling company, and established the foundation for a shift from the Takita era to a more organized, modern management style. At the end of World War II, the company was dissolved under pressure from the military. He rebuilt the company, starting with the relaunch of the January 1946 issue of Chuokoron, and once again became president.
