[History of Breeding]
Breeding, a major feature of Western orchids, is said to have begun in 1852 when J. Dominy of England crossed Calanthe furcata Lindl. with C. massuca Lindl. This hybrid flowered in 1856 and was named C. dominyi . Dominy is also known to have crossed Cattleya mossiae Hook. with Laelia crispa Reichb., flowering in 1863 and naming the cross Laeliocattleya Exoniensis as the first intergeneric hybrid.

　洋ランの大きな特色である品種改良は，1852年，イギリスのドミニーJ.Dominyが，カランセ･フルカタCalanthe furcata Lindl.にカランセ･マッスカC.massuca Lindl.を交配したのが始めとされている。この交配種は56年に開花し，カランセ･ドミニーC.dominyiと命名された。また属間交配のほうでは，やはりドミニーがカトレア･モシアエCattleya mossiae Hook.にレリア･クリスパLaelia crispa Reichb.を交配し，63年に開花させ，これをレリオカトレア･イクソニエンシスLaeliocattleya Exoniensisと命名したのが最初のものとされている。…
