...Knowing mathematicians of the time who despised technology and experiments, he re-proved many of the results he had previously obtained through experiments using the method of exhaustion, a method unique to Greek mathematics. These works include On Spheres and Cylinders and On Cones (Parabolic and Hyperbolic Solids) and Spheroids (Spheroids), which can now be read in the Greek texts compiled by JL Heiberg (Collected Works of Archimedes, vol. 3, 1910-15). In order to understand the nature of Archimedes's scholarship, we must not forget his famous approximation of the value of pi.
