A city in central-western Cuba. It is a port city facing the sheltered Cienfuegos Bay in the Caribbean Sea, about 230 km southeast of the capital Havana. Columbus visited in 1494, but the Spanish did not settle there until 1738, and in 1745 a fortress was built at the mouth of the bay to protect against pirates. However, the city was actually built by the French in 1819, and was destroyed by a hurricane in 1825, but was rebuilt. It is one of the richest modern cities in Cuba, and as the center of a fertile agricultural region, sugar cane, coffee, tobacco, henequen (a fiber material), rice, fruit, and livestock are collected and distributed, and there are industries such as sugar refining, coffee, tobacco, distilled spirits, and canned fish. The port is one of the main ports in Cuba, and sugar, molasses, etc. are shipped. It is connected to the rest of the country by rail, road, and air. The cityscape, which combines neoclassical and modern architecture, was registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the Historic Urban Centre of Cienfuegos in 2005.
