…The strong south or southwest wind that blows in the Red Sea is also called khamsin. harmattan A northeasterly trade wind that blows from the Sahara Desert in winter (November to March) along the coast of western Africa from the north shore of the Gulf of Guinea to Cape Verde. It is a dry wind that is often accompanied by dust.

...It can also be transported long distances by air currents, sink by gravity during calm periods, or fall to the ground with rain or ice crystals. Good examples are the yellow sand commonly seen in Japan in early spring and the harmattan that blows southwest from the Sahara Desert in West Africa.
