This is a chemical reaction in which an organic compound is reacted with ammonia and oxygen (or air) to produce a nitrile. The synthesis of acrylonitrile from propylene is a typical example. The synthesis of hydrogen cyanide (hydrogen prussic acid) by ammoxidation of methane is also known. This acrylonitrile synthesis reaction was first commercialized in 1960 by Standard Oil Co. of Ohio and was called the Sohio process. The catalyst used in this process was a composite oxide of molybdenum and bismuth with phosphorus as its main components and was called the Sohio catalyst.

有機化合物にアンモニアと酸素(または空気)を作用させ，ニトリルを製造する目的の化学反応をいう。プロピレンからのアクリロニトリル合成反応はその代表的な例である。ほかにメタンのアンモ酸化によるシアン化水素(青酸)合成も知られている。　このアクリロニトリル合成反応は1960年にスタンダード･オイル･オブ･オハイオ社Standard Oil Co.of Ohioによって最初に工業化されソハイオ法Sohio processと呼ばれ，またこの時に用いられた触媒はモリブデンおよびビスマスの複合酸化物とリンを主要成分とするもので，ソハイオ触媒と呼ばれた。
