Fukae Roshu

A painter from the mid-Edo period. His given name was Shoroku. His other name was Seibaido. He was the eldest son of Fukae Shozaemon, a merchant in Ginza, Kyoto. Given his father's relationship with Nakamura Kuranosuke, a Ginza official and a powerful supporter of Ogata Korin, he is believed to have studied under Korin in his youth, and is known as a mid-level Rinpa painter. In addition to three "Tsutanohosomichizu" folding screens (Tokyo Umezawa Memorial Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, etc.), which were inspired by Tawaraya Sotatsu's "Ise Monogatari Shikishi," many "Flowering Plants" have been handed down. His works show a simple, old-fashioned style that is more closely linked to the style of Sotatsu or his school than the refined technical sense of Korin.

江戸中期の画家。名は庄六(しょうろく)。別号は青白堂。京都の銀座商人、深江庄左衛門の長男。尾形光琳(こうりん)の有力な後援者で銀座役人の中村内蔵助(くらのすけ)と父との関係から、若いころ光琳に師事したと思われ、琳派の中堅画家として知られる。俵屋宗達(そうたつ)の『伊勢(いせ)物語色紙』に図柄を求めた『蔦細道(つたのほそみち)図』屏風(びょうぶ)3点（東京・梅沢記念館、クリーブランド美術館ほか）のほか、『草花図』が多く伝わる。洗練された光琳の技法感覚より、むしろ宗達ないしその一派の画風につながる素朴で古様な作風を示す。
