...However, pioneering phenomena were already seen in the activities of young artists in London in the 1950s. Richard Hamilton (1922-), Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-), Peter Smithson and others were early on interested in new subcultures of popular society, such as pop music, American movies, cybernetics, fashion, and science fiction, and held study groups and exhibitions. It is said that the name "Pop Art" was derived from a photo collage of Hamilton's work, which showed a bodybuilder holding a giant candy with the word "POP" written on it.
