Kido Shiro

Film producer. Born in Tokyo. After graduating from Tokyo Imperial University, he was adopted by Shochiku president Otani Takejiro. In 1924 (Taisho 13), he became the director of Shochiku Kinema Kamata Studio. He actively employed up-and-coming directors such as Shimazu Yasujiro, Gosho Heinosuke, Ozu Yasujiro, and Yoshimura Kozaburo, and grew Shochiku into a leading company in the industry alongside Nikkatsu by producing new-style comedies and women's films that placed emphasis on the screenplay. In 1936 (Showa 11), he moved his studio to Ofuna, where he continued to produce melodramas aimed at women, known as the Ofuna style, such as "Aizen Katsura" and "Your Name." He became president of Shochiku in 1954 (Showa 29), and chairman in 1971. He received the Kikuchi Kan Prize in 1974. In 1975, he established the Kido Prize with the aim of discovering excellent scenarios.

映画製作者。東京生まれ。東京帝国大学卒業後、松竹社長大谷竹次郎(おおたにたけじろう)の養子となる。1924年（大正13）松竹キネマ蒲田(かまた)撮影所長に就任。島津保次郎(やすじろう)、五所平之助(ごしょへいのすけ)、小津安二郎(おづやすじろう)、吉村公三郎(よしむらこうざぶろう)らの新進監督を積極的に起用、シナリオを重視した新しい感覚の小市民喜劇や女性映画によって、松竹を日活と並ぶ業界最大手に成長させた。1936年（昭和11）に大船へ撮影所を移転、『愛染(あいぜん)かつら』や『君の名は』など大船調といわれた女性向きのメロドラマを世に送り続けた。1954年（昭和29）松竹社長に就任、1971年に会長となる。1974年菊池寛賞受賞。1975年には優秀なシナリオの発掘を目的に城戸賞を設けた。
