He first studied Japanese mathematics under Maeda Kenshu, and later Shimada Naomasa. He also excelled in astronomy and surveying. He traveled around Kansai and Shikoku, and trained many disciples. He improved on Seki Takakazu's zero reduction technique, which he named Oshima-ryu. He died on April 13, 1718. He was from Osaka. His nickname was Zenzaemon. His pen name was Shiran.
