One of the samurai families of the Middle Ages. A local lord from Soga-go, Yamada County, Sanuki (present-day Sogawa, Takamatsu City). In 1293 (Einin 1) during the late Kamakura period, there was Togawa Motokiyo, who advanced into Awa as a vassal of Awa Shugo Ogasawara Tsuneharu, and in 1356 (Shohei 11, Enbun 1) during the Nanboku-cho period, there is Togawa Toku, who was appointed as Shugodai of Iyo as a deputy of Hosokawa Yoriyuki. Thus, the Togawa clan advanced into various parts of Shikoku following the Shugo of Awa, Sanuki, etc. from early on, but in the Muromachi period, as the Hosokawa clan acquired a part of the Kinai region, they advanced to the center, and from 1492 (Genchu 9, Meitoku 3) they worked as members of the inner corps at the Hosokawa residence in Kyoto, and in 1425 (Oei 32) Togawa Sozen was appointed Shugodai of Settsu.
