A perennial plant of the Oxalidaceae family (APG classification: Oxalidaceae). Thin hairs grow all over the plant. The roots are thickened, and many runners emerge from them above ground, with the upper part growing obliquely up to 10-30 cm long. There are many twigs, and even thinner roots may emerge from the stems that touch the ground. The leaves grow on the roots and alternate on the stems, with three clover-like leaflets at the end of long stalks. The leaflets are about 1 cm wide, oblate-ovate, concave at the tip, hairy on the underside and edges, open during the day, and close in two at night with the underside facing outward. They are usually green, but some are reddish purple or greenish purple. They flower from June to September. The inflorescence axis is axillary on an upright stem, and bears 1-8 flowers that face downward in an almost umbel shape. The flowers are yellow, about 8-10 mm in diameter. It has 5 sepals and 5 petals. It has 10 stamens and a superior ovary with 5 styles. The capsule is cylindrical and 2-2.5 cm long. It is covered with fine hairs and when ripe it splits into 5 parts, releasing many dark brown seeds. The seeds are broadly ovate and wrinkled. It grows from Hokkaido to the Ryukyu Islands and Ogasawara, and is widely distributed in the warm temperate zones of the world. It has a sour taste because it contains oxalic acid, and is also called Suimonogusa. Its beautiful leaf shape has led to it being used as a family crest (Suimonogusamon). For ornamental purposes, there are more than a dozen species cultivated under the name Oxalis, which are native to tropical America and Africa.
