Tirana (English spelling)
The capital of Albania. It is located on the banks of the Işim River, about 30 km inland from the Adriatic Sea, at the southern end of the fertile plain. The majority of the population is Muslim, with the rest being Greek Orthodox (Albanian National Church). It was founded in the early 17th century by Turkish general Suleiman Pasha. It became the capital of Albania in 1920. It was occupied by Italy in April 1939, but was liberated by the People's Army in November 1944, and the People's Republic was proclaimed in January 1946. There are about 20 factories, including woolen textiles, metalworking, wood processing, and butter manufacturing, all of which were built with the assistance of the Soviet Union. The city is connected to Durres and Elbasan by a railway built after World War II, and has an international airport. The city was built by Italian architects during the reign of King Ahmet Bey Zog, but new residential areas have developed since World War II. There is a national university, a national theater, a concert hall, and four museums that were established after the war. Population: 540,000 (2010).
