A village in Higashikubiki County in southern Niigata Prefecture. Population 2,776 (1995). It is located in the Higashikubiki Hills, upstream of the Hokura River. In the early modern period, it was divided into Yamagoko and Hokuraya. Oshima, in the center, developed as a post town on the Matsunoyama Highway, and now National Route 253 runs through it. Ohira in the north is a key bus transportation hub. In 1997, the Hokuriku Express Hokuhoku Line was opened, and Hokuhoku-Oshima Station was opened. The main industry is agriculture, mainly rice cultivation, but most of the cultivated land is terraced rice fields on the mountainside that use spring water and rainwater, and the scale of operations is small. 新潟県南部,東頸城(ひがしくびき)郡の村。人口2776(1995)。保倉川上流,東頸城丘陵にある。近世は山五十公郷,保倉谷郷に分かれていた。中心地大島は松之山街道の宿場として発達,現在は国道253号線が通る。北部の大平はバス交通の要衝である。97年北陸急行ほくほく線が開通し,ほくほく大島駅が開設。主産業は稲作を中心とする農業であるが,耕地の大部分は湧水や天水を利用する山腹の棚田で,経営規模も小さい。
