An evergreen or deciduous shrub or small tree (illustration) of the Apocynaceae family found in Africa and Madagascar. The base of the stem is often fleshy and swollen, serving as a water-storing organ. The stems range from aboveground to underground, reaching a height of about 10 m, and are solitary or branched, with cylindrical, spindle-shaped, globular, or blocky shapes. The leaves are usually fasciculated at the ends of the trunk or branches, large, with many parallel lateral veins, and not fleshy. Usually, there is a pair of thorns on each side of the leaf or on the upper edge of the leaf base, although in some species there are three. Many species also have thorns on the branches.
