João Goulart (1918- ), president of the PTB, who became president in 1961, mobilized workers and peasants to broaden the government's support base, but the military, fearing the infiltration of leftist forces into the military and the outbreak of a Cuban-style revolution, staged a coup on March 31, 1964 and established a military government. Brazil's military became professionalized early on, and since the days of the First Republic, it has played a role similar to that of a guardian of civilian government.
