The centre of Tonami county, Ecchu province (Toyama prefecture). Built in 1585 (Tensho 13) to replace Kifune Castle (Fukuoka town), which was destroyed in an earthquake, the castle was established by inviting temples, shrines and townspeople. The lord of the castle was Maeda Toshihide. It is said that the place name comes from the fact that the Kokuzo statue from Mt. Isurugi was moved to this area. The castle was abandoned in 1638 (Kan'ei 15) and the Ima Isurugi town district was established. In 1637 it also held the district of Johana town, and in 1640 it also held the district of Himi town. There were town officials such as town elders, chief officials and accountants. In 1742 (Kanpo 2), there were 15 main towns and 11 scattered towns.
