An elegant renga poem in the style of waka poetry. It is the counterpart of mushin renga. Around 1206, two renga poems, Kakinomoto and Kurimoto, were established in the Sento area of Emperor Gotoba. Poets such as Fujiwara no Teika composed elegant waka and renga poems in the Kakimoto group (the yushin group), while Confucian scholars such as Fujiwara no Nagafusa composed humorous kyoka and renga poems in the Kurimoto group (the mushin group). During the Nanboku-cho and Muromachi periods, yushin renga became the orthodox form of renga, and mushin renga gave rise to haikai renga (haikai).
