Mountain moray eel (Lathraea japonica Miq.)

Japanese: ヤマウツボ(山靫) - ヤマウツボ（英語表記）Lathraea japonica Miq.

A parasitic plant of the Scrophulariaceae family that grows in moist deciduous forests in mountainous regions. It is white overall with a slight brownish purple tinge, and grows in clusters at the base of trees such as Alnus albicilla. The stems are upright and reach a height of 15-30 cm, and the underground stems are densely covered with fleshy, scale-like leaves. The flower stalks above ground have large, sparsely scattered scale-like leaves. Flowers bloom densely at the ends of the flower stalks from May to July. The corolla is tubular with a lip-shaped tip, white with a slight reddish purple tinge, and about 12 mm long. The capsule is obovate with a pointed tip, about 5 mm long, and contains 1-2 seeds.
