…Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, to a family of precious metal merchants and financiers, he studied the practice and theory of finance and banking in London and Amsterdam, and returned to Scotland after a short stay in France. In 1705, he published Money and Trade Considered, in which he believed that the shortage of money was causing economic hardship in Scotland, and proposed issuing a kind of bill or paper money secured by land (land money) to make up for the shortage of metal currency, based on the theory that an abundant supply of money is the basis of economic development. However, this proposal was not accepted in Scotland, so he moved to France in 1706 in search of a new field of activity. …
