This is a former place name located near the Yotsuya 4-chome intersection in the southeast of Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. In the Edo period, the name was derived from the Okido gate that was established at the entrance and exit of the Edo city area and played the role of a checkpoint for control. In contrast to the Shiba Takanawa Okido on the Tokaido, the Koshu Kaido was called Yotsuya Okido (established in 1616). The second checkpoint was Yotsuya Mitsuke, which was abolished in 1792 (Kansei 4) when Mitsuke was completed (1636), and the stone walls on both sides of the road were removed in the Meiji period. Nearby were Yotsuya Tenmacho and Yotsuya Shiocho, which were relocated from Nihonbashi, and were a bustling shopping district on the Koshu Kaido. Currently, a monument remains next to the side of the service gate of the Shinjuku Office of the Tokyo Metropolitan Waterworks Bureau. On the other hand, Takanawa Okido (Takanawa 2-chome, Minato-ku), which was established in 1710 (7th year of the Hoei Era), is preserved as a nationally designated historic site, and its earthworks remain. Ino Tadataka's nationwide survey was based here.
