Sāhil in Arabic. A region of West Africa stretching from Senegal to Sudan. A strip of land that separates the Sahara Desert from the West African rainforests, it covers northern Senegal, southern Mauritania, the great bend of the Niger River in Mali, southern Niger, northeastern Nigeria, and south-central Chad. The annual rainfall is 100-200 mm, mostly from June to August. The grasslands are covered with savannah grasslands, with bushes and acacias, providing natural pastures for camels, cattle, and sheep. The main agricultural products are groundnuts and millet, but desertification is progressing in some areas due to excessive cultivation and grazing.
