Sorcerer - Jushi

Japanese:
Sorcerer - Jushi

They are also called "shushi," "sushi," or "zushi." There are Buddhist jushi who are Buddhist monks and jushi who are Sarugaku performers. The former are called Hojushi, and are in charge of esoteric Buddhist practices such as the creation of barriers for the dojo, as well as the use of perfume and goma at Shusho-e and Shunie ceremonies. Juushi Sarugaku is a concrete performance that demonstrates the power of the Hojushi's practices to the general pilgrims. The juushi's performance is called "Hashiri-te," and the pieces are counted as one or two. There were over ten moves, but the pieces known today include Ken-te, Musha-te, Daito Manjusri-te, and Tori-bami. The jinshi belonged to temples and were protected by the nobility. They wore gorgeous costumes and helmets, and danced to the accompaniment of drums while shaking bells. The jinshi, who were glamorous during the Heian period, gradually fell into decline in the Kamakura period.
