A satirical narrative poem by the English poet J. Dryden. Published in 1681. During the reign of Charles II, the Duke of Shaftesbury's faction plotted to oust the Duke of York, the king's brother, as the heir to the throne and to support the Duke of Monmouth, the king's illegitimate son. In 1681, Shaftesbury was accused of treason. This poem was written with the political purpose of guiding the trial in favor of the king and his brother. It uses the story in the Old Testament's Book of Samuel, in which David's son Absalom is instigated by the chief minister and conspirator Achitophel to rebel against his father. It uses Old Testament characters to depict the figures and motives of the main characters of both factions, making it an interesting work for modern readers beyond the political situation of the time. A representative masterpiece of English political satire. The second part (1682) was written mainly by N. Tate, with additions by Dryden.
