Gorizia (English spelling)

Japanese: ゴリツィア(英語表記)Gorizia
Gorizia (English spelling)
Gorica in Slovenian. Capital of Gorizia Province, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, northeastern Italy. Located 35 km north-northwest of Trieste, on the border with Slovenia. The highlands that stretch from the Colle del Castello to the banks of the Isonzo River block the north winds, so the city enjoys a mild climate. A key transportation point dating back to 1001, it is a cultural center, with the 14th-century Church of St. Ignatius and the castle of the Count of Gorizia, the former lord of the region. A distribution center for agricultural products, its main industries are textiles, chemicals, and machine manufacturing. It was under Austrian control from the Middle Ages until World War I, and was one of the fiercest battlefields between the Italian and Austrian armies during the war. In 1947, part of the eastern part of the city became part of Yugoslavia (now Slovenia). Population 37,999 (1991 estimate).
