A marine fish of the Perciformes order, family Polytminae (illustration). It is a cold-water fish that is found in Alaska, the Bering Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk, and Sakhalin. In Japan, it is found in a narrow area, mainly along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk in Hokkaido. Its English name is said to come from the fact that it has powerful conical canines in the front of both jaws, giving it a wolf-like appearance, and its Japanese name is also derived from this English name. Another major characteristic is the presence of large molars on the sides of both jaws, the vomer, and the palatine bone, which it uses to crush and eat bivalves and snails, as well as large crustaceans.
