Wolf - Wolf

Japanese: オオカミ(狼) - オオカミ
Wolf - Wolf
Also known as the gray wolf, spotted wolf, or grey wolf. A mammal of the carnivora family Canidae. Body length is 1-1.5m. Its body shape is similar to that of a dog, but it has a long snout, small, upright ears, and a drooping tail. Its body color is mostly gray-brown. It is distributed from Eurasia to northern North America. It lives in forests, taiga, tundra, deserts, plains, and mountainous areas, and acts alone or as a family, but lives in colonies in winter. It preys on birds and animals such as elk, caribou, and deer, and sometimes attacks large livestock such as cows and horses. It can also mate with dogs. In Japan, there used to be a large Hokkaido wolf in Hokkaido and a small Japanese wolf (mountain dog) in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, but the former became extinct around 1900, and the latter in 1905. Both are extinct (Ministry of the Environment's 4th Red List).
