...It was a group with no unified technique or ideology, and consisted of several dozen diverse painters, such as Perov, who satirized Russian customs, Isaak Il'ich Levitan (1860-1900), who had a love for Russian landscapes, and Repin and Surikov, who painted historical pictures, many of whom were from the serf class. Critic Vladimir Vasil'evich Stasov (1824-1906) and collector Pavel Mikhailovich Tret'yakov (1832-1998) were strong supporters of the Itinerant Exhibitionists. In 1893, Repin and several other members were appointed professors at the Academy, and the group's activities naturally died out, but some of the artists continued to create and advocate their ideas into the 20th century. ...

...The Tretyakov brothers, linen merchants in Moscow, started their personal collection. In his youth, the elder brother Pavel Mikhailovich Tret'yakov (1832-98) came into contact with the Hermitage Museum and other collections in St. Petersburg, and began collecting only Russian paintings with the enlightened aim of following Chernyshevsky's socialist ideology, which advocated the construction of public art museums. In the 1870s, he supported the Traveling Exhibitionists in St. Petersburg, purchasing many works and bringing them back to Moscow, leading the critic Stasov to call him "the enemy of St. Petersburg" with kind sarcasm. ...
