Omi was a family name given to powerful clans native to the Yamato region, and along with Omuraji, it was the title given to those who became the highest government officials in the Yamato Imperial Court. 〘名〙 大和政権での最高執政官の一つ。臣(おみ)は大和地方土着の豪族に与えられた姓(かばね)で、そのうち大連(おおむらじ)とともに大和朝廷の最高執政官となったものを称した。平群、巨勢、葛城、蘇我氏などが任じられた。おおまちぎみ。おおみ。おおいまちぎみ。※古事記伝(1798)二九「大臣は意富淤美と訓べし。〈略〉さて大臣と云号は、師も云れたる如く、後世の如き官名には非ず」[補注]「書紀‐雄略即位前(図書寮本訓)」に「遂に共に間(ひとま)を得て円大臣(つぶらのオホオネ)の宅に逃げ入る」とあるのは、写本に「(オホオ)弥」とあったものを「(オホオ)祢」と誤ったものか。
