...The crustal heat flow is calculated by measuring the thermal gradient (called the geothermal temperature gradient) and the thermal conductivity of the crust, and multiplying these two measurements together. The unit is the amount of heat passing through a unit area in a unit time, 10 ^-6 cal/cm ² ･s, and is called the heat flow unit (HFU). There are about 10,000 actual measurements around the world, and the average value on land is estimated to be about 1.5 HFU, the average value in the ocean, including heat loss due to hydrothermal action, is about 2.2 HFU, and the global average is estimated to be about 1.9 HFU.
