1649‐1719 (Keian 2‐Kyoho 4) A haiku poet of the early Edo period. His surname was Amano, and he was commonly known as Todayu. His other pseudonyms included Taihakudo. He was from Iga and is thought to have been related to Basho. In 1691 (4th year of Genroku), he followed Basho eastward and settled in Edo, where he established himself as a haiku poet. In 1696, on the third anniversary of Basho's death, he retraced the steps of "Oku no Hosomichi" and composed "Mutsu-dori" (The Narrow Road to the Deep North), and on the 17th anniversary, he composed "Awazuhara" (Awazuhara). His tradition flourished for generations as the Taihakudo. "The sparrows wake up to the sound of the nightingale" (from "Sumitawara").
