Oeyama Pass (Oeyama Pass)

Japanese: 大枝山関(大江山関) - おおえやまのせき
Oeyama Pass (Oeyama Pass)
This checkpoint was established just before the Oinosaka Pass (present-day Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto City) where the San'in Road passes from Yamashiro to Tamba. It was established to procure laborers (soldiers) and food for the transport of annual taxes from the manors under the jurisdiction of Tenryu-ji Temple. It appears in historical documents from the Oei era (1394-1428), and in 1423 the shogunate established customs fees for this checkpoint. It is assumed that Tenryu-ji Temple made a considerable profit from this, but it is unclear how long it continued to function as a checkpoint after that.
