FTP - FTP

One of the protocols (communication rules) used to transfer files in network environments such as the Internet. Abbreviation for File Transfer Protocol. The content of the standard is defined in a document called RFC (Request For Comment) issued by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), a voluntary organization that promotes the standardization of Internet-related technologies.

It is used to send and receive files between a dedicated server on the Internet called an FTP server and a client's computer, using a dedicated FTP software or browser. It is a system that is used as often as email protocols such as SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, used when sending email and transferring email between servers), POP (Post Office Protocol, used when receiving email), and HTTP, but since FTP is designed for file transfer and can handle large amounts of data at once, it is mainly used when uploading web pages at once.

There are also anonymous FTP servers that are used to widely distribute data (documents, images, freeware, etc.) on the Internet. These do not require authentication with a dedicated ID and password, which is necessary when accessing a general FTP server, and allow data to be freely downloaded.

インターネットなどのネットワーク環境で、ファイルを転送するために使うプロトコル（通信規約）の一つ。File Transfer Protocol（ファイル転送プロトコル）の略。規格内容は、インターネット関連技術の標準化を進める任意団体のIETF（Internet Engineering Task Force）が発行するRFC（Request For Comment）という文書で定められている。

　ネット上にあるFTPサーバーとよばれる専用サーバーと、クライアント側のパソコンの間でのファイルの送受信に使われ、その際には専用のFTPソフトやブラウザーなどを利用する。電子メールのプロトコルであるSMTP（Simple Mail Transfer Protocol、メール送信時やサーバー間でのメール転送時に使われる）やPOP（Post Office Protocol、メール受信時に使われる）、HTTPなどと同じようによく利用されている仕組みであるが、FTPはファイル転送を目的としており、大量のデータを一度に扱うことができることから、おもにウェブページを一度にアップロードするときなどに使われている。

　インターネット上に広く公開してデータ（文書や画像、フリーウェアなど）を配布する場合に使われる、anonymous FTP（アノニマスFTP）サーバーもある。こちらは一般的なFTPサーバーにアクセスする場合に必要な、専用のIDとパスワードなどによる認証が不要で、自由にデータをダウンロードすることができるようになっている。
