Kakuobi - square belt

Japanese:
Kakuobi - square belt

A type of men's obi. It is the opposite of a heko obi (a traditional Japanese sash), which is three shaku long. It is a formal obi for men. It is woven thick and firm, especially as a men's obi fabric. The finished obi width is 8-11 centimeters, and the length is 3.8-4.2 meters. There are two types: one where the finished width is folded in half and a core is inserted, and one where there is no core and both ends of the fukuro weave are quilted; in recent years, the latter has become more popular.

Materials include silk, cotton, synthetic fibers, and mixed weaves, but silk fabrics are more formal and are tighter to wear. Cotton, synthetic fibers, and mixed weaves are for everyday use. Most obi fabrics are Hakata-ori. Hakata-ori is mainly Kenjo Hakata, which is a type of fabric with a striped design of a dokko hanazara plate, and is often plain or striped. Other types include plain and patterned weaves such as Tsuzure-ori and Donsu. Most colors are navy blue or brown. A Hakata-ori square obi is always worn under the hakama for formal wear, and is tied in the bunko. If worn as a kimono, it is tied in the kai-no-kuchi. In the past, there were hasami-obi and komageta-musubi obi. Single-piece obi are for summer use only. In particular, those woven narrowly, at 4 to 5 centimeters, are used as obi belts to be worn over tanzen, yukata, nightwear, etc.
