Gigantopithecus - Gigantopithecus

Gigantopithecus - Gigantopithecus

A type of fossil primate with huge teeth and skull discovered in southern China. In 1935, Dutch paleontologist Königswald discovered and purchased a huge molar, 10 times the volume of a modern human, among keel bones (fossils) being sold at a Hong Kong pharmacy, and gave it the genus name Gigantopithecus, meaning "giant ape". The leading anthropologist Weidenreich found human-like characteristics in this specimen and, combining it with Meganthropus excavated from Java, proposed the theory that humans were giants by nature. However, this theory was rejected when specimens of the same genus were later discovered in southwestern China and India, which proved to be large fossil apes. However, it has attracted attention because it is from the Middle Pleistocene (Pleistocene), the same era as Homo erectus.
