…Born in New Hampshire. He initially studied bird ecology, but after World War II he moved to studying the material production of biological communities. In 1954 he published a textbook called "Fundamentals of Ecology" that strongly advocated this position, contributing to the development of so-called production ecology. He was also knowledgeable about radiobiology and held a central position in the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. In the third revised edition of the textbook published in 1971, he emphasized the danger of biological accumulation of radioactivity in the environment and warned against nuclear testing and the careless use of nuclear power generation. …
