Italian author. His father was a merchant from the suburbs of Florence. He went to Naples to train as a merchant and became fascinated with literature, writing allegorical love stories in verse and prose that allude to his love for Maria (?), the illegitimate daughter of the King of Naples. After returning home, he continued with works such as "Ameto" and "Elegy of Fiammetta," but eventually wrote "Decameron," set against the backdrop of Florence devastated by the plague, and became a representative author of Italian prose literature. He also wrote humanistic research works such as "Lives of the Notables" and "The Life of Dante," and lectured on "The Divine Comedy" at the invitation of the city of Florence.

イタリアの作家。父はフィレンツェ近郊出身の商人。ナポリへ商業の見習に行き文学に熱中，ナポリ王の庶子マリア（？）との恋をうかがわせる寓意的な恋物語を韻文，散文で書く。これは帰郷後にも《アメート》《フィアンメッタの悲歌》などと続くが，やがてペストで荒廃したフィレンツェを背景とした《デカメロン》を著し，イタリア散文文学の代表的作家となる。ほかに人文主義的研究の著作《名士列伝》や《ダンテ伝》，フィレンツェ市の招きで《神曲》講義などの仕事を残した。
