Illustrations of the life of Buddha

Japanese: 仏伝図 - ぶつでんず

Among Buddhist narrative illustrations, these depict the deeds of Shakyamuni from just before his birth until just after his nirvana. They were also painted in China and Japan, but were most popular in India before the Common Era. Many of the works are sculptures that ornate the towers and balustrades of stupas, and famous ones include those at Bharhut, Sanchi, and Bodh Gaya. Other than sculptures, there are excellent examples of illustrations of the life of Buddha in the Ajanta murals of the Gupta period. In Japan, the Illustrated Causal Sutra is also excellent as a picture scroll.

仏教説話図のうち釈尊の出生直前から涅槃 (ねはん) 直後までの事績を表現したもの。中国，日本でも描かれているが，特に紀元前のインドで最も流行した。作品としては，ストゥーパの塔門や欄楯 (らんじゅん) を荘厳 (しょうごん) した彫刻が多く，バールフット，サーンチー，ブッダガヤーなどのものが有名。彫刻以外の仏伝図としては，グプタ朝のアジャンタ壁画にすぐれたものがある。なお日本では絵因果経が絵巻としてもすぐれている。
