Natsumikan (summer orange) - Citrus natsudaidai

Natsumikan (summer orange) - Citrus natsudaidai
An evergreen shrub of the Rutaceae family. It is now widely cultivated throughout Japan, but was first developed in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is said to have originated as a hybrid or was obtained by accidental seedling propagation. The trunk is about 3m tall, and white flowers bloom in early summer, with the fruit ripening the following spring. The fruit is large and flattened, with an easily peelable skin and consisting of 9-11 lobes. It is juicy but very sour, and can be eaten raw or made into marmalade or candied. Recently, less sour varieties have been developed by crossbreeding it with other citrus species.
