Lake Il'meni (English spelling)

Japanese: イリメニ[湖]（英語表記）Ozero Il’men’

A lake in the lowlands of Novgorod Oblast in the northwest of the Russian Federation. It is less than 10m deep, and its area varies from 610 to 2100 km2 depending on the seasonal water level. It freezes over for an average of 162 days a year. The Msta, Sheron, and Lobach rivers flow into it, and the Volkhov River flows north and empties into Lake Ladoga. In ancient Russia, the waterway connecting Volkhov-Ilmeny-Lovat-Dnieper was an important trade route connecting the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea, and the ancient city of Novgorod, located on the Volkhov River 8km north of the lake, was its trading base.

ロシア連邦北西部ノブゴロド州の低地にある湖。水深10m以内，面積は季節的水位差で610～2100km2と変化する。年平均氷結日数162日。ムスタ，シェロン，ロバチ川などが流入し，流出するボルホフ川は北流してラドガ湖に注ぐ。古代ロシアではボルホフ―イリメニ―ロバチ―ドニエプルとつなぐ水路はバルト海と黒海を結ぶ重要な交易路であり，湖の北8kmのボルホフ河畔に位置する古都ノブゴロドはその通商拠点であった。
