...The name "Art Theatre Guild" was coined by Mori Iwao, and although there is no organization by that name in the United States or the United Kingdom, small cinemas called "art houses" have sprung up in the United States since the early 1950s in university towns, New York and other big cities to cater to new audiences looking for non-Hollywood films, i.e., art films, or European films, and continue to show Italian neorealism, British Balcon-style comedies, and films by directors such as Jean Renoir and Ingmar Bergman. Apparently, in the 1920s, an American avant-garde film theater that showed German Expressionist and Russian avant-garde works was once called the Filmart Theatre, and the English word "art theatre" refers more to artistic and avant-garde "theater" and the theater itself. The original purpose of ATG, the "famous film screening movement," has been continued by "Equipe de Cinema," which was started in 1974 by Takano Etsuko, general manager of Iwanami Hall, and Kawakita Kashiko, president of the Film Library Assistance Council (now the Kawakita Memorial Film Culture Foundation).

…〈アート･シアター･ギルド〉の名称は森岩雄の命名になるもので，アメリカやイギリスにその名の組織があるわけではないが，アメリカでは1950年代初頭から非ハリウッド映画＝芸術映画＝ヨーロッパ映画を求める新しい観客のために，〈アート･ハウスart house〉と呼ばれる小さな映画館が大学街やニューヨークその他の大都市に生まれ，イタリアのネオレアリズモやイギリスのバルコン･タッチの喜劇映画，ジャン･ルノアールやイングマール･ベルイマン監督の作品などを上映しつづけている。1920年代にドイツ表現派の作品やロシア･アバンギャルドの作品を上映したアメリカの前衛映画劇場が，フィルムアート･シアターFilmart Theatreの名で呼ばれたことがあるとのことで，英語のart theatreはむしろ芸術的･前衛的〈演劇〉およびその劇場を指す言葉である。なお，ATG発足当初の目的であった〈名画上映運動〉は，74年に岩波ホール総支配人の高野悦子と，フィルムライブラリー助成協議会(現，川喜多記念映画文化財団)代表の川喜多かしこ両人の主宰によってスタートした〈エキプ･ド･シネマ〉に受け継がれている。…
