...Gall's phrenology lost momentum due to the theory of cortical equivalence, but the idea that functions are localized in the cerebral cortex was revived by P. Broca's research on aphasia in 1961 and J.H. Jackson's research on epilepsy in 1963. In 1970, G. Fritsch and E. Hitzig found that electrical stimulation of certain parts of the cerebral cortex caused muscle contractions in certain parts of the body, revealing the existence of the motor cortex, and the theory of localization became definitive. K. Brodmann also divided the cerebral cortex into 52 areas based on differences in tissue structure examined under a microscope, and assigned each area a serial number (1909). ...
