A city in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship in southeastern Poland. It is located on the San River near the border with Ukraine, at the junction of the Carpathian Mountains and the Sandomierz Basin. It was a key location on the East-West trade route and began as a fortress city. In the 10th century, it was the subject of a dispute between Poland and Ruthenia (→Carpathians = Ukraine). It became part of Poland in 1340, and obtained city rights in 1389. It developed as a commercial and cultural center of the region. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it flourished as a defense base against invasions by Magyars and other tribes. In 1772, it became part of Austria during the First Partition of Poland, and was returned to Poland in 1918. It suffered heavy damage during World War II, but many of its important historical buildings, including the museum, were spared. In 1960, natural gas fields were developed nearby. Industries include textiles, electrical equipment, chemicals, and food processing. It is also known as a cultural city, with the oldest amateur theater company in Poland. Population 68,095 (2002).
