A city in the southeast of the Tsukushi Plain in southern Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Its center is Hainuzuka, a post town and market town on the road from Kokura to Satsuma, and it is served by the Kyushu Shinkansen and Kagoshima Main Line. It is a rice paddy area, and tea, rush grass, grapes, pears, and strawberries are cultivated thrivingly. Electrical, machinery, and food factories are located here, and in recent years both the population and industrial shipments have increased. Kurume Kasuri (woven textiles) are also produced here. It is home to Funagoya Onsen and Ishijinyama Kofun. Area: 41.78 km2 . Population: 48,512 (2010).

福岡県南部,筑紫(つくし)平野の南東部を占める市。1954年市制。中心は小倉から薩摩へ向かう街道の宿場町・市場町であった羽犬塚(はいぬづか)で,九州新幹線,鹿児島本線が通じる。水田地帯で,茶,イグサ,ブドウ,ナシ,イチゴの栽培が盛ん。電機,機械,食品などの工場が立地し,近年は人口,工業出荷額ともに増加。久留米絣(くるめがすり)の生産も行われる。船小屋温泉,石人山古墳がある。41.78km2。4万8512人(2010)。
