A Buddhist painter active from the end of the Heian period to the beginning of the Kamakura period. The son of Takuma Tameto, he was known by the secular name Tamemoto, and after entering the priesthood he was appointed Hokkyo in 1184. He was ahead of his time in actively adopting the style of Song painting, and showed the distinctive features of the Takuma school in his thick and thin lines and cool colors. The Twelve Heavenly Gods Screen (National Treasure) at Kyoogokokuji Temple, painted in 1191, is famous as a typical example of his work.
